Big city service organization has local presence

What does Springfield have in common with Houston, Dallas, Orlando, Southern California, Palm Beach, and Baton Rouge?  A service organization by the name “The Gathering” that focuses on supporting men in leadership, whether it be in business, in government or in the community.   It puts a priority on friendship, because statistics have said that maybe even as few as 1 in 10 men can say they have a friend.  Started in 1978 and officially organized in 1987, the Gathering is a Christian non-profit that established a Springfield, Ohio presence in January of 2008.

Director Jeff Pinkleton

City Director Jeff Pinkleton originally hails from Nashville, Tennessee, is married to wife Kara and has three young boys, who keep him on the run.  A sports aficionado, Jeff is not an OSU fan, but the locals forgive him for that.  Professionally, he roots for the Indianapolis Colts.  Jeff’s relationships in the sporting community often allow him to get access to tickets that he generously gives away to men and women (there is a women’s group as well) he comes across.  About 80 men and women meet locally due to his efforts.

My experience

I like the Gathering and support it.  Why?  Because it supports me.  I once wrote, “I’m a businessman and community leader working for the Chamber of Commerce; I’m on multiple boards; I’m a dad of two girls (4 and 15); I’m working 60-80 hours a week—all the time.  Stress through the roof.  Discouragement frequent.  Weariness common.  What do I need to keep going?  To keep strong?  A friend, a cup of coffee, some free sports tickets, access to some really good speakers, someone trying to encourage me here and there.“  This is what Jeff and the Gathering do for me.

The annual breakfast – Oct. 6 this year with Clark Kellogg

Almost 200 attended last year’s breakfast with former NFL quarterback Todd Blackledge.  This year’s breakfast is taking place on Oct. 6 at 7:30 a.m. at the downtown Springfield Courtyard by Marriott.  Tickets are $35, and sponsorships are available.

The keynote speaker this year will be Clark Kellogg.  Kellogg is an Ohio State basketball legend–one of the stars of the Indiana Pacer franchise and lead studio analyst for CBS college basketball, including the Final Four for the past decade.  This year he moved to the lead analyst chair courtside, replacing a CBS original, Billy Packer.
