SPRINGFIELD, OHIO (June 9, 2009) – The downtown hospital construction left Joe and Julie Garrigan no choice but to relocate their 70-year-old office supply distribution business, Garrigan’s Office Plus, from its current location at 234 W. Columbia. But, they’re not going far. Garrigan’s is the only business displaced by the hospital to choose to relocate within the core Center City zone.

Construction is well underway for a new office and distribution center at 14 N. Yellow Springs Street, which should be completed in late July.

“Springfield has been important to our family and business for 70 years, and we wanted to do something that would keep us downtown and provide a better space for our employees,” said Joe Garrigan. “This is an important time for Springfield, and we want to be part of the renaissance.”

Garrigan’s will no longer have a retail storefront at its new location, which may surprise passers-by or the occasional office supply shopper who may have stopped to purchase supplies at the current location.

“More than 95 percent of our business is done through commercial orders – phone, online and fax orders,” said Joe Garrigan. “While we’ll miss the retail store, it just doesn’t make sense from a business perspective to continue it.”

Garrigan’s has developed a customized online ordering system at, that allows customers to place orders online and have them delivered for free within 24 hours, or pick them up at the distribution warehouse.

“When you go online, your customized pages populate with the things you order most,” said Julie Garrigan. “Instead of sifting through thousands of printer cartridges, the site is tailored to include only the print cartridges you use. It simplifies the entire process.”

While customers will not be able to browse a retail store to select a carton of paper or a chair, they will still have the ability to place an order by phone, fax or online and pick it up at Garrigan’s service center if they need it sooner than it would be delivered.

“We will have Will Call, where people will be able to stop in to pick up those last-minute supplies,” said Julie Garrigan.

In addition, the new building will have room for a larger sales staff and meeting space around 10,500 square feet. The plans call for 4,500 square feet of office space and a 5,900 square foot warehouse.

In all, Garrigan’s is making a $1.2 million investment in Springfield, including construction, real estate and new equipment. The Garrigans even selected a local contractor, Kapp Construction. A greenspace component to the new facility includes a small, well-landscaped “park” that is being installed by Terry Fredrich of Habitat Creations of Ohio.

“It’s important to us to have a nice place for our employees to work and to add to the economic and aesthetic value of downtown Springfield,” said Julie Garrigan. “After all, we work there, too.”
